James DozierMajor General James L. Dozier celebrates a career in the military that has spanned 35 incredible years. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1956, he advanced to the rank of a major general in 1984 before retiring the following year. During his career, he was stationed abroad in Germany and Italy, as well as in the United States in Washington, Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Knox, Kentucky. Mr. Dozier also served in Vietnam with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment from 1968 to 1969, and later conducted tours of duty in the Pentagon and Germany.

During his exemplary military career, Mr. Dozier was captured by the Italian Red Brigades, a Marxist terrorist group that was noted as Europe’s most feared terrorist organization, in 1981. Later rescued by Maj. Edoardo Perna and 12 other men after 42 days of captivity, he was the world’s most famous hostage at that time. As the deputy chief of staff at NATO’s Southern European land forces, which was headquartered in Verona, Italy, he was the only American flag officer to have been captured by a violent non-state actor. Upon surviving this harrowing experience, Mr. Dozier was personally congratulated by President Ronald Reagan by phone and a subsequent visit to the White House, and was soon thereafter promoted to major general before retiring from active military service.

After retiring from the U.S. Army, Mr. Dozier worked for several companies in Florida, including as the president of Golden Grove Management Corporation in his hometown of Arcadia, Florida. He later excelled in the same capacity for Suncoast Media Group in Venice, Florida. After four years as the general manager for David C. Brown Enterprises, Mr. Dozier owned his own business, JCS Group, in Fort Myers, Florida, from 1993 to 2004.

Graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1956, Mr. Dozier later obtained a Master of Science in aerospace engineering at the University of Arizona in 1964. He also completed coursework at the Army Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College. He has received several honors for his military service, including a Silver Star Medal, Legion of Merit Award and Purple Heart. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Dozier has been selected for inclusion in every edition of Who’s Who in America since 1987.
